Excerpt: We’re off to see the Wizard
This excerpt is from “We’re off to see the Wizard”. It takes place in the King house on Day 2.
Philip and Jamie, in their pajama and robes, are sitting together on the sofa, cracking up as they listen to Amanda’s Russina instructional tape.
TAPE VOICE: When all else fails create a diversion. Something totally unexpected. For example, shouting ‘The Red Chinese have taken Vladivostok!’
Jamie and Philip just laugh. Amanda walks in, sees what’s happening. She turns off the recorder.
Amanda: Fellas…… you’re supposed to be in bed.
Philip: Learning Russian. It’s really strange.
Amanda: It’s not for you. It’s…. for…. adults.
Jamie: Hey Mom…. what’s ‘The Commisar wears silk underwear’ mean?
Amanda blanches, shakes her head.
Amanda: I don’t know. I haven’t gotten that far yet. (taking recorder) And that’s as far as you’re getting. It’s way past your bedtime. Goodnight, sweethearts.
The kids grumble, but get up. Amanda kisses them both and they exit. She sits and hits ‘Play’ on the recorder.
