Excerpt: Santa’s got a Brand New Bag
This is from the script of ‘Santa’s got a Brand New Bag.’ This excerpt has quite a bit more Dotty and Joe in it, in fact, this script is quite a bit different from the aired scene.
Dotty is stirring a bowl full of stiff batter, looking out the back window as Amanda enters. She hooks her purse over her arm in order to handle severl platters of cookies (intended for The Agency party.)
Amanda: Okay mother, I’m on my way.
Dotty turns Amanda away from the den door.
Dotty: No you’re not. They’re having some trouble with your present.
Amanda: Still? Joe took the wagon before breakfast.
Joe: (off camera) Owww! Jamie that was my hand!
In the background we see the boys and Joe struggling with a huge piece of woodcraft past the den door windows.
Amanda: I’ve got to get going! If I want to reun any errands on the way to work…. unless you can pick up the pistachio baskets.
Dotty: I can’t. I’ve got to finish the gingerbread men, then I promised Mrs. Livingston I’d drop by…. the mailman tells me she’s not very good this year… I suppose I could ask Lillin to do something.
Amanda: She’s on vacation.
Dotty: So she’s been reminding me since the day she got here. Do you know she’s expecting me to drive her to Jamestown again to see the Coloni Christmas exhibit? (beat) Why go again…, it hasn’t changed in three hundred years.
Joe enters nursing his hand.
Joe: (Hands Amanda keys) Here’s your keys. I’ll help you get that to the car.
Amanda: Are you all right?
Joe: I don’t think I’ll lose the nail. (remembers) They sure bounce off the walls this time of year. Now, they want to stuff that old fake Santa up in the chimney. I’m exhausted and it’s only eight o’clock.
Dotty: I’m still recovering from Thanksgiving.
Amanda: Come on… in two days all the work’ll be done. It’ll be Christmas, we can sit back, open our presents, be together as a family… (beat) Then start to clean it all up.
The oven timer rings insistently. Dotty jumps to turn it off and take out the gingerbread men, Amanda goes out the door and Joe starts for the front of the house.
