A terrified Kate Jackson is being stalked by a man swearing his undying love for the actress.
The obsessed fan even broke into her Beverly Hills home. Stealing into her bedroom while Kate was away on the Scarecrow and Mrs. King set, he left behind a helium-filled balloon with a note stenciled on the outside. Another note, complete with a photograph of the fan and his dog was delivered to her house.
“One of these days, we’ll be together,” was the message.
The man is described as having dark hair and a beard. He’s believed to be in his early 30’s. He claimed in his note to have once been a student at UCLA - but that’s all police have to ggo on in their desperate search for the stalker. Although the FBI and the police have circulated the photo of the man, his identity is still unknown. And that makes Kate - and everyone who surrounds her - increasingly nervous.
In an effort to protect herself, Kate 37, has hired a full time personal security team. A guard even accompanies her to the Scarecrow set at the Burbank Studios where her CBS series is filmed.
“Just getting through on the studio phone is a project,” says a friend of on of Kate’s co-stars. “I used to be able to call up and be put through anytime. Now, I go through the third degree before being put through to their stage.”
Although friends and colleagues have spoken of the extra studio security, there is no official confirmation of it. “We are aware of the situation,” says studio Security CHief Jack Egger, “but we can’t discuss the protection of any star.”
One of Kate’s co-workers revealed that the man who is now harassing her has been in contact with the actress periodically over the last two years. And while the sporadic communications were alwas worrisome, she didn’t tkae the drastic precaution of hiring full-time protection until he broke into her home.
“Kate has long been security-conscious, but just because she thought it made sense in these times,” says another friend. “The house she lived in when she was married to Andrew Stevens had a bathroom that could be shut off like a personal vault in case someone got into the place. It also had sensors in the floors which would set off alarms if anyone entered.”
It is not known if Kate has a similar security and warning system in her present Beverly Hills home.
Kate’s friends are worried that her fear of a crazed fan pursuing her could isolate her from her fans - something she’s avoided doing throughout her TV career. She’s made herself visible and accessible to the public by riding in parades and marching for causes like Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. But the days of meeting and greeting her public may be over if the man terrorizing the the actress isn’t apprehended soon.
Kate is the second former Charlie’s Angels star to be harassed by an obsessed fan. Last winter, Jaclyn Smith was badly shaker by a series of letters from a man named Bernard Ortiz, who allegedly threatened to “kill anything or anybody” who tried to come between them Jaclyn had also been harassed in 1978 by a man reportedly named Jesus Pedroza, a disturbed fan who once pounded on her door, threateneing to “bust it in.” He was finally arrested by police.
