“We get along terrifically,” enthuses Bruce Boxleinter about his Scarecrow and Mrs. King co-star Kate Jackson. While on the show, these two are unwilling partners, tossing saucy wisecracks back and forth, off-camera they share a close friendship and mutual respect. “I feel like I have two wives,” continues Bruce who is happily married to actress Kathryn Holcomb, the mother of his two sons. “I spend so much time with Kate I think we know each other so well that a lot of things are second nature especially when we’re working together on-camera. We’re just like a team of horses.”
Kate and Bruce often go out after hours with their respective dates - Kate with her most frequent companion of late, Ron Samuels, ex-manager of Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter, and Bruce with his wife. Kate gets along very well with Bruce’s family and visits their ranch home in Los Angeles often. “He’s in control of his life, of his career,” says Kate, naming a few reasons for her admiration of Bruce. “He’s dedicated, loyal. He’s got a lovely family and a great sense of humor.” They genuinely like each other, clowning around between scenes when working, and playing tennis together on weekends when they’re not.
While rumors have it that Kate is hard to work with, Bruce vehemently denies them. “I think her reputation is more mythical than reality, it’s a little out of proportion. She can be tough but this is a tough business. The hours are killers - we love it but it can be hard on you and Kate is a very demanding professional.” In the series, Bruce plays top government agent Lee Stetson (code name Scarecrow) to Kate’s Mrs. King, a housewife who, more often than not, ends up saving them from peril. Their on-screen chemistry is quite obvious and they’re happy to take it a step further. “I know Kate feels the same way I do, that we’re glad to consummate this relationship because it’s very difficult for us to keep finding something new in staying friends.”
Bruce’s marriage is known to be very happy especially in Hollywood circles. “My marriage is very good but we have all the problems everyone else has. I’m not easy to live with and because of this job, it’s not easy. I have a marvelous wife.” As for Kate, she’s still on the lookout. She’s enjoying the companionship of Ron for now, and hopes to marry again one day. When Bruce and Kate are not with their off-screen partners, they’re more than happy to be teamed together. This is probably my most enjoyable work,” says Bruce wistfully, “and I have to say it’s because of working with Kate.”
