Twelve-year-old Paul Stout was playing outside his home with several of his 14 pets when he was summoned to the telephone. The call was to inform the young actor that he would be joining Kate Jackson and Bruce Boxleitner, stars of “Scarecrow and Mrs. King,” which starts its second season in the fall, for broadcast Mondays (8:00-9:00 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network, to film an episode in Munich, West Germany. Paul stars as Miss Jackson’s older son, Philip, in the adventure series.

For Paul, the experience of traveling to a foreign country was made even more enjoyable because his two younger brothers and mother were able to accompany him.

“I was jumping for joy from the moment I heard we were going,” said the blond-haired, hazel-eyed youngster. “I remember my first reaction to seeing Germany. It was from the plane, and I thought, ‘So this is Germany. It’s so beautiful from up here.’”

On the days Paul had free, he and his family rode the Munich underground, visited historic sites, including the famous Nymphenburg Palace, Englischer Garten and Tierpark Hellabrunn (Europe’s largest zoo). They also took a two-hour train ride to Salzburg, Austria. There, Paul and his brothers pitched in their shillings to buy their mother a traditional Bavarian dress to wear to dinner.

That night, dressed in his newly purchased leiderhose, Paul treated his family to an unforgettable meal in their hotel’s restaurant.

“I made friends with the maitre’d',” he confides. “He took very good care of us. This restaurant is extremely fancy, and the food is very good, especially the steak and the bratwurst. I think I’ve gotten spoiled. I don’t like hamburgers anymore!”

What else about Munich impressed this young gentleman?

“The old buildings and the young German girls!”
